Florence Smith

Florence M. Smith, 89, of Billings, Oklahoma, was the daughter of Leslie Milbert and Edna Margaret Brewer Holcomb. She was born on July 3, 1919 in Shattuck, Oklahoma and died Monday, January 5, 2009 at her home. She attended school at IXL in Three Sands. Florence married Eugene Fredrick Smith in Kay County. He preceded her in death on February 21, 1973. Florence owned and operated Tonkawa Cafeacute;. Florence returned to school at the age of 54 and received her LPN license. She then worked at Shawn Manor and Newkirk Nursing Center. She was a dedicated mother who took care of her quadriplegic son for sixteen years after retiring from nursing. Florence enjoyed quilting, crafts, gardening, reading and collecting cardinals, state spoons and salt and pepper shakers. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 8, 2009 at the First Baptist Church in Billings. Rev. Floyd Westfall will officiate. Interment will be in Tonkawa IOOF Cemetery in Tonkawa. Services are under the direction of Dugger Funeral Home in Billings, Oklahoma. Florence is survived by one son, Earnest Smith and his wife, Sharon, of Fritch, Texas; six daughters, Roberta Warner of Billings, Oklahoma, Bonnie Voegele and her husband, Jim, of Newkirk, Oklahoma, Joyce Aycock of Mobeetie, Texas, Sharon James and her husband, David, of Catoosa, Oklahoma, Barbara Haskins and her husband, Homer, of Amarillo, Texas and Eugenia Lunsford and her husband, Bob, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one step-daughter, Rosalee Endorf of Ark City, Kansas; nineteen grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and two brothers, Gene Holcomb of Rosalia, Kansas and James Holcomb of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two sons, Leslie Smith and James Smith, two daughters, Erma Smith and Margaret Smith, two step-daughters, Dorothy Johnson and Ruth Bowman, one step-son, Orval Smith, one brother, Lewis Holcomb and one sister, Betty Jo Dewitt.
