Helen Watson

August 17, 1920 — April 30, 2012

Helen Irene Hannum Watson, 91, of Perry, Oklahoma, was the daughter of John Washington and Iva Jane Stipe Watson. She was born on August 17, 1920 in Irving, Texas and died Monday, April 30, 2012 at Green Valley Nursing Home in Perry. She married Leon Alonzo Hannum in 1937 and lived in Oklahoma City with him until he passed away in 1975. She then moved back to Grapevine, Texas and met Buddy Watson whom she married. Helen was born a Watson, became a Hannum and left this world as a Watson. Helen loved to sew and was an amazing seamstress. She retired from being a seamstress in 1982. Her hobbies included bingo and fishing. She loved the fact that her life was full of uncanny similarities. Her daughter Karan was born on her birthday. Her son James was born on New Years Eve seventeen years after Karan. Helens grandson, William L. Ash was born on Halloween Eve. Cherie, Helens granddaughter, was born on Thanksgiving Day and Cheries brother, Austin was born eight years and one day after her. Helen always called her husband Leon Happy and he called her Ruben. When her son James came along in 1955 and Kenny Rodgers released the song Ruben James in the 1970s Helen thought that this was just another similarity in her life. She was known for her funny and fun loving personality but was a very honest and honorable person. Helen was also known for speaking her mind and being independent. She was a character even down to choosing not to drive a car but always wanting to be on the go. She collected owls and was a wise owl herself. Helen loved everyone she knew and they all loved her. She was a very giving person who lived life to the fullest. A celebration of Helens life will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 4, 2012 graveside at Yukon Cemetery in Yukon, Oklahoma. Minister Joe Williams will officiate. Services are under the direction of BrownDugger Funeral Home in Perry. A very special thanks from the family to the staff of Green Valley Nursing Home for the wonderful care she received and all the special friends that Helen made.
