Homer Shoemaker

Homer Shoemaker, 84, of Garber, Oklahoma was the son of Orville Vere and Gladys Longan Shoemaker. He was born June 29, 1926 in Blackwell, Oklahoma and died Thursday, August 26, 2010 at the Integris Bass Baptist Hospital in Enid, Oklahoma. On July 20, 1946, Homer married Patsy Drake in Winnfield, Kansas. Homer attended school in Blackwell. He served his country throughout World War II as a radioman first class with the United States Navy on the USS Gato Submarine. He was present at Tokyo Bay when Japan surrendered. He was a master machinist for Bell Helicopter and retired with the government. Homer was a member of the Garber United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Oklahoma Sub Vets, VFW Post 02270, the Masonic Lodge Post 1388, Scottish Rites of San Antonio, National Sub Vest of America and Submarine Vet Polaris. Homer loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. He enjoyed sports, fishing, golfing and being outside. He will always be remembered as kind, generous, funny, thoughtful, and a caring husband and father. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon until 4:00 p.m. Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Dugger Funeral Home in Garber. The family has requested no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Dugger Funeral Home in Garber. Homer is survived by his wife, Patsy Shoemaker one son, Chris Shoemaker of Colorado Springs, Colorado one daughter, Tracy McGowan of Garber, Oklahoma four grandchildren, Erin Silva, Noah McGowan, Adam McGowan and Amy McGowan, all of Corpus Christi, Texas five greatgrandchildren, Mollie Silva, Patrick Silva, Rory McGowan, Andrew McGowan and Jake McGowan, all of Corpus Christi, Texas four brothers, Joe Max Shoemaker of Blackwell, Oklahoma, Richard Shoemaker of Roswell, Georgia, O.V. Shoemaker of Edmond, Oklahoma and Larry Shoemaker of St. Louis, Missouri two sisters, Judy Berry of Phoenix, Arizona and Becky Hall of Nardin, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Gladys Shoemaker three sisters, Patsy Klein, Wava Trompler and Shirley Shoemaker and many loving cousins.
