James Delbert Sherley, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on September 3, 2025, in Perry, Oklahoma, at the age of 66. Born on October 8, 1958, in Independence, Kansas, James lived a life filled with laughter, love, and cherished memories.
He served in the U.S. Army, a testament to his dedication and commitment to his country, before transitioning into his role as a grounds keeper for a cemetery and many more. James was not just a caretaker of the grounds he worked on; he was a caretaker of family bonds and friendships that brought joy and laughter to all who knew him.
James attended schools in Independence and El Dorado, Kansas, laying the foundation for a life that would endlessly touch the hearts of those around him. His personality shone bright, characterized by his humor and warmth, often referred to affectionately as “grandpa” by his many grandchildren, who were a significant part of his life. James would spend countless hours sitting outside in the fresh air, watching the world go by with his loved ones close by, a true testament to the importance he placed on family time.
He leaves behind his devoted wife, Lorri, with whom he shared his days and dreams, and his cherished children: son William Sherley and his wife Sara of Kansas; daughter Lisa Sherley of Kansas; daughter Ashley Branch and her husband Tyler of Kansas; and son Stephen Voyles of Perry. He also adored his adopted daughter, Reva Dunagan of Perry. James took immense pride in his grandchildren—Selena and her husband Joe, Cyarra, Christopher, Matthew, Marcus, Jordan, Amar, Josh, Alexandria, Andy, Michael, Adrianna, Johnathan, Skylar, and Alexus—as well as his great-grandchildren, Bailey and Aspen.
James is survived by his siblings: Norma Hise, David Monroe, Kenny Monroe and his wife Emma, Tina Ryan and her husband Tim Vincent-Ryan, David Monroe, Rita Smith, Norma Hise, and sister-in-law Amy Sherley. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews whose lives he touched in meaningful ways. James was also the proud owner of a dog named Buddy, who was always by his side, sharing in his daily adventures.
James was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Delbert Monroe, his mother, Lola Mae Monroe Sherley, and his brother, John Sherley. Though he has left this world, the love he shared with his family and friends will live on in their hearts. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his kindness, humor, and the beautiful legacy of love he created throughout his life.
